Sweden to provide logistical support to EU peace monitors in Aceh
STOCKHOLM (AP): Sweden said on Monday it will give up to 40 million kronor (US$5.29 million) and provide logistical support to European Union observers monitoring a peace agreement in Aceh province.
Eight people from the Swedish rescue service will make sure the EU observers have access to offices, transportation and telecommunications in the tsunami-ravaged province, the government said.
Up to 300 monitors from the EU and five Southeast Asian countries will be deployed across the province starting Aug. 16 to ensure the Free Aceh Movement and the military comply with a deal reached in Finland last month, including the withdrawal of thousands of Indonesian troops and the disarmament of theguerrillas.
"The peace agreement is a unique opportunity for a lasting peace in Aceh province and the EU's observers fill an important function in monitoring it," Aid Minister Carin Jamtin said in a statement.
Many of the Free Aceh Movement leaders live in exile in Sweden. (*)
