 ASEAN Brussels Committee (ABC)


A committee composed of the Heads of Mission/Ambassadors of the ASEAN Missions to the EU based in Brussels (Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam). The Missions of Myanmar and Cambodia to the EU are based in Paris but they are periodically updated of the developments and issues taken up by the Committee and often invited to bilateral meetings with EU officials. Currently the Chair of ABC H.E. Mr. Thongphachanh Sonnasingh, Ambassador of Lao PDR.

The Chairmanship of the Committee is rotated alphabetically and assumed for a period of six months (from February to July and from August to January). The ABC meets once a month to discuss political, economic and trade issues concerning ASEAN-EU relations. The ABC also undertakes regular dialogues with prominent officers from the European Commission, European Parliament, ministers from EU member states and sometimes Heads of Missions of ASEAN dialogue partners in order to brief them of significant current ASEAN issues and vice versa.

To facilitate its work, the ABC is assisted by the ABC Working Group and the ABC Sub-Committee on Trade. The establishment and organization of the ABC are based on the "Terms of Reference and Guidelines for the Organization of ASEAN Committees in Third Countries", as adopted by the 2nd Meeting of the 13th ASEAN Standing Committee, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 17 October 1979.
